For this AEDM post I combined two days as I worked on the same piece.

I decided to take pictures of this piece as I went along. There are subtle differences but I did them so that I could remember how things looked as I went along.

I had originally drawn this piece earlier in the month but had left it as pencil while I figured out what to do next – waiting for brevity to set in because I really wanted to add colour but that is a challenge for me. As well, I have become rather attached to this girl so I was afraid to ruin it if I tried a technique outside of my comfort zone and messed up. Eek!

I’ve been so inspired by other artist’s work during this month and creating every day (or almost every day!) has given me a bit more confidence that I can do this so I finally decided to add colour.

I have a set of watercolour pencils so I used those first.

Just yesterday I bought a set of Prismacolor Fine Line Markers (so excited!) and used them to outline in different weights. I think after seeing this with and without the marker I prefer the marker. It gives the piece more definition – then again, I’m Β new to pencil crayons in this way so that could be why.

Then I added some water to my crayons and I love the effect and the richness of the tones – yay!Company-of-Night-3

Lastly, I added a bit of acrylic white paint to the stars and the moon. I used just a tad to brighten it up.

Thank you as always for the feedback. It means the world to my creative soul.

Gotta go rouse the critters big and small but I will find time throughout the day to visit other sites.

Happy creating!

  1. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I adore this piece. It’s like a painting-within-a-painting — which is making me want to re-watch Inception, but that’s another story. πŸ™‚ I love your use of watercolor here, and I agree that the outlining in marker makes the individual elements pop beautifully off the page. Gorgeous work!

Oooh, now I want to watch Inception. I’ve heard of it but I guess I mostly live under a rock. πŸ˜‰ Thank you for the kind words as it is so important to me to know what works. And…I am thrilled that you adore this! Thank you!

I know! I’ve stayed away from colour (other than a little watercolour) for so long as I never really learned how to apply it, theoretically and physically although I did go to art school. Funny, yes, but I did more textiles, metal and photography than two-dimensional work. I think I may invest in a watercolour book or something about colour. I will make more! πŸ™‚

  2. I really love this! You have such a way with drawing these amazing little surreal scenes, it looks so delicate and sweet. Beautiful! When I have a pencildrawing that I’m afraid to ruin I scan it and print it out on watercolour paper. Then you can experiment as much as you want, while still having the original. Just a thought …..

It feels amazing, liberating, like a new life by creating again this past month. I feel like a part of me that has been locked up in a dark and dismal place for so long and is finally seeing the light of day. I finally am starting to come full circle. πŸ™‚
