Our second project for The Year of the Fairytale was to do a spot illustration for The Frog Princess. A spot illustration is a small picture made to go next to text, something little that shows a tidbit of info and not like full-on illustrations that are bigger and tend to fill more of the page. Does that make sense? 🙂

I was having some trouble coming up with visuals in my head, what I wanted to draw and how I wanted it to look. Carla had us read the story again and make a list of parts from the story that could become small illustrations. That was very helpful but I had so many ideas I did find it difficult to pick one! Luckily we are to do three…whew!

Low and behold, last night as I was in the midst of doing my exercises for a Level 1 Reiki class I am taking (and loving!) I swear it was divine intervention that brought an image into my mind in great detail. I was at the end of my practice so it was easy to keep the image in my head while I finished up my exercises. I went directly to the table (the dining room/lesson/art table) and brought out my supplies and went to work!

Artmaking

I haven’t used much mixed media but this time, with the help of Carla’s amazing instructional videos (similar to those linked here but made specific for this class), I learned how to use watercolour, gell medium and PanPastels together! Oh my!

It was so much fun the work just flowed out of me. Incredible feeling.
