I’ve wanted to begin drawing realistically again but I am used to having a good block of time to do so. Coming to the realization that I’m not single and in art school anymore where I could work uninterrupted on a drawing (many times 6-8 hours was expected) I had to come up with a different tactic. I’m so out of practice anyway so I have decided to do short sketches to start as opposed to working on a finished line drawing with marker outline, much of what I’ve done recently. I love those pieces but want to do more.
While my boys were practicing their typing skills on my computer – they are eager writers so this will help – I decided to do a face study. It’s slowly coming back to me.
I think her lips are a little too stereotypically luscious for me but I remind myself this is just practice.

Gorgeous!! It is interesting how we have to change up our expectations of things once we are parents. We can’t order our days about quite the same way eh? lol
So true! It’s taken me 9 years to figure it out – better late than never! 🙂
yes! great attitude and you are so talented — love seeing your work. <3
Thank you, Lori! It’s good to share, but it has taken much time, battling fear, and focusing on your dreams. 🙂
Your sketch is gorgeous! I’m so glad you’re taking time for yourself and your art. 🙂
I was looking through the RI School of Design continuing ed spring catalog this weekend and saw an intensive drawing studio, one weekday per week for six weeks, 6 hours per day, and I said, “Imagine getting to just draw for 6 hours!” My husband said, “You sound a bit wistful.” Yeah. Yeah, I do. THAT would get my drawing skills back right quick, wouldn’t it??
We don’t get the long uninterrupted blocks of time anymore unless we move mountains, but we *can* get time here and there. I’m glad you’re sharing your drawings!
Amy! How amazing it would be to have 6 hours of uninterrupted time once a week to draw! Hmmm…although having the chatter of young boys in the background is so nice…must teach them to cook! Haha! I completely get the wistful feel you speak of and it’s the perfect descriptive word. I guess we will just have to take 15 minutes here and there (maybe during meals for me) to draw. True, we cannot move mountains so we take the time to walk around them, enjoying the journey. Thanks. 🙂
Beautiful sketch. It is those tiny pockets of time that can mean so much 🙂
You are so right, Kim! It felt so good to take that time. An extra five minutes here and there feels rushed more often than not, but if I think of it in parts as in drawing the same piece a bit at a time, I think I can get somewhere. That’s the challenge for me. 😉
Amazing. The tiny snatched moments are the most precious of all, aren’t they.
They are indeed. I think it’s because we are so aware of those little bits of time, being mindful of those moments so they don’t pass us by.
Love your attitude and your drawing!! 🙂
Thank you, Charmaine! Attitude is a building block to life, eh? 😉

Just getting back here to see this. She is a beauty. You did a wonderful job in your short time. Sometimes my project ideas are so big that I need time to even set them up and get overwhelmed with just the prep… this helped me to see that even the prep, being part of the process, can be broken down and done with those bits of time.
You are so talented. I love seeing your drawings!
