I’m thrilled to be joining Dawn today for Make and Listen Along. Haven’t listened to much music lately other than classical on CBCR2 which I find perfect background music. However, there has been a lot of making so I am joining this week’s Creative Every Day as well.
I have continued to do some drawing studies to warm up my drawing skills on a more realistic level. So to continue from aΒ previous postΒ on drawing I took some time last night to draw another girl.
I have a friend who told me of an odd dream she had involving a girl and a crow. There is more to it than that and I’ll explain more when I have a final drawing but for now that is what I wanted to focus on. I grabbed one of my favourite childhood books, Faeries by Brian Froud and Alan Lee. I grew up reading this book and imagining the characters coming to life. Β They were so fantastic, beautiful and dangerous. From time to time I would copy out one of the character sketches when I drew, which was quite often for this shy, little introverted girl.
While looking through the book last night I noticed a lot of elongated limbs and long necks, small eyes and angular joints. I laughed to myself realizing that much of my drawing style today comes from these books.
I am also an avid knitter but that doesn’t mean I get a ton of knitting done, which also means I’m probably not using the correct word here, haha! I love knitting and have a few projects on the go: Minecraft inspired fingerless gloves for two boys (almost done the third glove), winter cowl neck shawl (started two years ago), and my first pair of socks. I also have some gloves to knit for a dear friend and a winter hat for me.
I’ve wanted to knit socks for a couple of years now and I started my first sock a couple of days ago. I’ve already had to pull it out once from dropped stitches that I just couldn’t manage to fix. But, I’m persistent and excited. This will be a huge accomplishment for me as I oftentimes hear of sock woes, turning the heel horrors and oddly fitting finished products. I’m game though. I can do this. π
I’m going to be taking an intro to Reiki class in a couple of weeks for which I am very excited and then continue on to Level One. To add more to my heaping plate which already includes home schooling, part-time work, keeping home and all that jazz and creative me-time β oh, plus I am trying to be a part of Write Alm when I can which has only happened once so far but you gotta start somewhere! (whew run-on sentence!) Β β I am thinking of taking one of Carla Sonheim’s online workshops. I love her work and own one of her books. It’s a year-long workshop with a fairy-tale theme, using different media along the way. Sounds just up my alley and a great way to advance my presently rough art skills.
I’ve always been an artist at heart and somehow I feel I’ve dishonoured my BFA by letting go of art instead of finding time here and there. That’s the biggest challenge these days but one I am overcoming. I think this would help or am I adding to much to my plate? Encouragement people, that’s what I need! Or just tell me I’m crazy and will go even crazier if I do this! I know the decision is up to me but I had to put it out there. Teehee. π
Happy creating!

Oh. She is so wonderful. She looks strong yet gentle and reflective.
So excited about the socks! You can turn that heel! No problem!
The art workshop sounds really great. I think you should leap in. It is amazing what the support of others can do – look at what happened in Nov. I know you were pretty wiped out at the end of the month but look at the amazing work you have created for you!
Thanks for sharing today!
xx
Dawn, I totally heart you. π
Right back at ya! xx
π
She is beautiful! And looks at those socks, you just might get me to cast some on π
Crazy, maybe, but it all sounds so inspiring, I say go for it!
Haha – I’ll do my darndest, Kim! It is crazy, isn’t it? Then again, crazies usually accomplish things…so I’m okay with crazy. Thanks! π
Happy to provide encouragement. I think you should nurture art and creativity in your life however you can.
Words of wisdom. Thank you, Renee. π
Wowie. You are very talented. Hang in there with the knitting. Practice makes possible! I’m a newbie at Write Alm too.
Thank you! I like that – practice makes possible! π Yay, another Write Alm newbie!
Before turning my first heel I was advised to make sure I had a bit of quiet, uninterrupted time and, if possible, someone to read the directions out loud to me. And actually, because I’m super anal, I knit a swatch and practiced turning the heel before I did it on the sock. But truly, it’s not as daunting as it seems.
Take the class, if you want to! You’ll find the time to do the work, because you’re passionate about it.
Thanks for the tip, Amy. I will source out quiet time and space for the heel, especially the first one! π I don’t think I would have the patience to knit a swatch, although it’s a brilliant idea! Yes, I am passionate about it and I think taking the class will drive me to do more than I am at this point. Thanks!
Oh that sketch is looking great. Wow socks … you are so brave. I can knit a swatch … not sure if that counts as knowing how to knit. lol …
I say go for it. The crazier the better … I am loading myself up too. Thanks for mentioning Write Alm. I just checked it out and the prompt are great even if not for writing! You go girl … and you inspired me to do more myself too.
Thanks, Myriam! Maybe loading myself up a bit with creative things done just for me is what I need. It balances the loading up of everyday life. π Glad to be an inspiration – wow! π
your drawings are adorable!
Thank you! It’s the little girl in me coming out. π
i LOVE your drawing!
Thank you! π
Both pieces look lovely, and it’s great that you’re still practicing. Keeping the creativity going is always a great goal! Happy PPF!
Thank you, Abigail. Encouraging words are so wonderful. I will indeed continue and have just signed up for that workshop – yay!
She is so so beautiful …. Love her!
thank you, Denthe! so nice to hear from you! π
