Oh how few posts I’ve had lately. I have good reason, pinky swear.
Firstly, the boys’ programs started up again and our home schooling lives got even busier so by the end of the day I just wanted to read and not paint. I was okay with that because I know now that I had overcome some obstacles regarding ‘getting my art on’ it’d be waaay easier to get back into creating once I was up to it.
Secondly, I had LASIK surgery so I’ve been a couple weeks healing my eyes. I still think of taking my glasses off at night. My eyes are a bit dry right now as part of the surgery so I continually feel like I am wearing contacts. Such a surreal experience after needing eyewear for thirty years!
Thirdly, I now have a WICKED cold. Evil, like the devil. Ugh.
As of yesterday, I was three projects behind for the Fairytale Workshop (see side bar left). For some reason, despite the glossy-eyed-snotty-sneezy-chilled-sexy-voiced person that I was, I set the boys to work on their Minecraft Homeschool work and got out my paints. Didn’t even think about it and the best part was that I didn’t even stress or self-criticize the work, I just went at it blindly, not literally of course because I can totally see so clearly now. (oh yeah!)
Previously, Carla had us cut out some magazine pics with the Princess and the Pea story in mind and placed them on paper with our paper dolls and take a pic. We did about 20 of these. Then we chose one to paint. For the painting utensil we used a ‘credit card’ of some sort and acrylic paints. These were covered over with opaque gesso and then painted a bit more. Whatever felt right.
It was great to be so out of it that I just went into automatic painting mode – kind of zombied out, if you will. Haha, apparently there is a new term for those of use Moms who are exhausted (who isn’t?): Mombies. Love it. My husband right now, with all the work he is doing is The Walking Dad. Yep.
Digressing…I took pics as I went along and I was so pleased with my paint mixing mess that I took a pic of that too. 🙂 I included the collage I used as my reference.
First you make a mess with the paint.
Then you make some sense of it all.
Add gesso.
Detail. Don’t forget to the pea.
Add princess painted free-hand (totally not my forté).
Add newsprint nightie because it looks waaay better than the hand-painted clothing.
In case you are wondering those are beds piled on top of one another.
I did really enjoy this process. I love this painting, not for how it looks because I know it looks pretty rudimentary, but as I swallowed my pride last November when I started creating again (big help), I love this painting because I was able to let go and just do. The more I do the better I’ll get. But now, onto Little Red Riding Hood. One of my favourites!
I’ve been nominated by amazing artist, Denthe, for the Liebster award. I haven’t had a chance to look into this yet but am flattered that she thought of my site as one of hers to nominate. I am going to take a rest and then pay it forward/back to her. 🙂

Oh! My! Goodness! That is awesome! I absolutely love seeing the process too! Yay for creating!
I am totally sad that you have a cold though! ;-(
Okay, this is totally amazing. Thanks for sharing the process, so cool!
Haha you wonderful ladies are so awesomely supportive – thanks so much! Love. 🙂
this is just lovely! And your fairy tale series sounds intriguing! I will have to learn more!
Thank you for visiting my blog! 🙂 The fairy tale workshop is wonderful and Carla is such a great artist!
It’s a wonderful workshop and Carla rocks! 🙂
cute princess and love how you showed all the layers, thanks for sharing
Thank you! I took pics of the layers at first for my own use, just to show myself the process I took after the fact – if that makes any sense. Then I thought I’d share it because I love to see the process other’s go through to get to the final piece.
I was just thinking about you the other day! I’m so glad to see a new post. 🙂 And I love the way this piece turned out, and your bravery in just going for it. Beautiful work!
Hi Elizabeth! I was just thinking of you the other day too!! So nice to hear from you, hope you are well and thank you for the supportive comments, as always.
What a neat process, to move from collage to painting, not using a brush…very cool. I’m adding that to my mental list of Things I Want To Try (when I finish the Things I’m Already Doing, of course!!).
Thanks for the art update!
Yes, you have a pretty full ‘creative plate’! But putting it on your list is a must because it’s so fun!
Love it! As always, you are motivating me! 🙂
I love that you love it! That motivates me so right back at ya! 😉 Thanks, Charmaine!
